The United States has donated 10,000 doses of mpox vaccine to Nigeria to help fight a current outbreak. The donation, provided by USAID, targets high-risk individuals and healthcare workers in five states with the highest cases: Bayelsa, Edo, Cross-River, Lagos, and Rivers.
Ambassador Richard Mills highlighted the importance of this timely aid and encouraged Nigeria to seek additional vaccines. The vaccine is safe and approved by Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. The Nigerian government, represented by Prof. Ali Pate’s team, thanked the US and promised to use the vaccines immediately.
USAID also continues to support Nigeria in improving health systems and combating infectious diseases. Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a rare viral disease transmitted from animals to humans.
