Six Dead from Cassava Flour in Kogi

The Kogi State Government is investigating the deaths of six people who fell ill after eating possibly contaminated cassava flour. The incident occurred last Wednesday in Anyoke, Okunchi Ward, Adavi Local Government Area. Eight individuals were taken to hospitals, and six died from multiple organ failure, while the two survivors have since been discharged.

State Commissioner for Health AbdulAzzez Adeiza revealed that a specialized team, including officials from the World Health Organisation, is handling the investigation. They have collected samples of the cassava flour for toxicological analysis and are working with the Ministry of Agriculture.

The government has covered the victims’ medical expenses and will release the final toxicology report once available. They also thanked healthcare workers and urged the community to maintain vigilance and report any unusual symptoms. Fortunately, no additional cases have been reported in the area.
