Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is nearing a season-long loan move to newly promoted Ipswich Town, according to reports. Phillips, who has struggled to secure a regular spot at City since his £45m transfer from Leeds United two years ago, is seeking more playing time.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on Thursday, stating that Phillips will undergo medical tests soon and that the loan does not include a buy option. It was also reported that Phillips will join Ipswich Town for the season.
Phillips has faced difficulties breaking into Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup consistently. Last season, he joined West Ham United on loan but struggled with poor form and injuries, affecting his chances for England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Despite Guardiola’s praise during City’s pre-season tour, Phillips did not feature in the Community Shield match against Manchester United. The move to Ipswich Town offers Phillips a chance to regain his form and confidence. Ipswich, recently promoted from the Championship, has managed to secure Phillips’ loan despite interest from other clubs like Fulham. Romano noted that Phillips is expected to sign later today if everything goes smoothly, with the deal set to be finalized by Friday morning.
