Nigerian health experts from the Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society (NIDS) have outlined how Nigeria should handle the Mpox threat. They are calling for increased funding for Mpox monitoring and response efforts. NIDS is worried about rising Mpox cases across Africa and the need for more investment in other diseases to avoid neglect during the Mpox response.
In a recent statement, NIDS emphasized the importance of improving Mpox surveillance, especially by focusing on animals, environmental risks, and behaviors. They also urged better monitoring at entry points to prevent new strains from entering Nigeria. The experts support the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in decentralizing Mpox lab tests to speed up results and improve patient care. They recommend more funding for NCDC and a review of Mpox case definitions to address emerging symptoms and high rates of false-negative test results.
NIDS is also pushing for better public awareness and community engagement to reduce misconceptions and stigma around Mpox. They advocate for more research and development in Nigeria to better understand the disease and find effective treatments. Health workers are advised to maintain strict infection control practices and avoid spreading unverified information. The public is encouraged to report suspected cases and follow health guidelines. NIDS is committed to supporting efforts against Mpox through advocacy, research, and partnerships
