Barrister Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, died on Monday evening, August 20, 2024, after collapsing in his hotel room in Abuja. This occurred shortly after attending a meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters, chaired by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
Witnesses said Ijalaye appeared in good spirits during the meeting. However, after returning to his hotel at Bon Octagon in the Federal Capital Territory, he suddenly collapsed. The cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.
Ijalaye, originally from Ondo State, was appointed Ogun State’s REC in March 2022. His sudden passing has left many shocked, with INEC yet to release an official statement on the incident
