The 191-Year-Old Tortoise Who Outlived 31 Governors

Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa), was born around 1832. He arrived on the island of Saint Helena from the Seychelles in 1882, alongside three other tortoises. At the time, he was approximately 50 years old.

Jonathan has roamed the grounds at Plantation House, the St.
Helena governor’s mansion, since the late 1800s.

Named in the 1930s by Sir Spencer Davis, Governor of Saint Helena, Jonathan has since witnessed the terms of 31 governors. His remarkable longevity has made him a historical figure on the island.

As of 2024, Jonathan is estimated to be about 191 years old, holding the title of the oldest known living land animal. His age far exceeds the average life expectancy of 150 years for land tortoises.

Jonathan slowly makes the rounds outside the St. Helena governor’s mansion earlier this year.

Despite being blind and lacking a sense of smell, Jonathan, who weighs around 400 pounds, remains in good health. He navigates his environment using his acute hearing, a testament to his remarkable resilience and adaptation.
